REVIEWS

"Against the backdrop of terrorism on U.S. soil, Brockmann weaves three complex romantic relationships -- one fondly recalled, one unexpectedly resumed and one bursting at the seams to get started -- into a tight tale that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the author's next installment. When terrorists kidnap her grandmother, Eve, and her 10-year-old daughter, Amy, widowed translator Meg takes an Eastern European official hostage to trade for her lost family members. Readers will forgive the plot's implausibility as Meg hurls herself headlong into her risky rescue attempt in spite of interference by former flame and Navy SEAL Lt. John Nilsson. While heating tension and passion to the boiling point, Brockmann firmly squashes the cliche of military men with hearts of stone and imbues her SEALs with honest emotional courage. In an equally refreshing move, she then stands the romance formula on its head, making the SEALs chase the intelligent, self-confident women who've done just fine so far without them. A smart, thrilling keeper among so many disposable stories, this is one to recommend heartily to friends."
-- Publishers Weekly

"Two words can best describe Suzanne Brockmann's March 2001 romantic adventure, THE DEFIANT HERO -- utterly brilliant.  As Ms. Brockmann continues to redefine contemporary romance and its boundaries, she will enthrall her fans with another unforgettable triple love story.  Readers will be treated to a nostalgic, touching "World War II" romance, an intensely steamy "opposites attract" romance and a pulse pounding "lives on the line" romance.  Don't miss this latest yummy offering from Suzanne Brockmann completely with chocolate syrup!"

"Meg Moore has had a bad day -- a very bad day. It started with a terrorist informing her that her daughter and grandmother had been kidnapped, and ended with her holding a gun on an ambassador in the embassy where she worked. Her only hope for rescue came in the form of U.S. Navy Seal John Nilsson, a man who she had relied on in the past. When last they met, Meg had been married and a relationship with John was just a dream, but now she is a widow and if John can help her out of her predicament they just may have a chance. Calling in the FBI to assist him in negotiations, John is determined to help Meg rescue her family. But first he must get her to trust him....
Ms. Brockmann brings together her Seal Team from The Unsung Hero, and continues a wonderful love/hate relationship between Alyssa Locke and Sam Starrett. I can't wait for their story! Also as in The Unsung Hero there is a wonderful flashback story featuring Meg's grandmother and her WWII era romance. It is such a beautiful story in its own right, I almost wished it had its own book! Ms. Brockmann has done it again with this beautiful, heart-wrenching, adrenaline filled, page turner (can I gush a little more?). Run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore and buy The Defiant Hero -- you won't regret it!"

"WOW!  WHATTARIDE"
"I really like Nils - he's true topflight hero material. And Meg... what can I say about this strong, intelligent, loving woman you've created? I can't imagine being in her shoes and being so tough and ready to do what must be done.
"As for Eve - she reminded me very much of my own mother, another WWII survivor...

"All in all, I'd have to say that "The Defiant Hero" ranks right up there with "The Unsung Hero"...

"Well done, Suz! Kudos! Multiple ones!"
-- Merry Cutler, Bookseller

"I just finished reading Defiant Hero. Not bad. Okay, okay, I loved it, it was great. In fact I enjoyed it much more than Unsung Hero, I think because there seemed (to me) to be so much anger between Tom and Kelly and that wasn't there with Meg and Nils. I liked Nils, a lot, he's a guy I'd like to know in real life. Of course it would be nice to have a great big wall calendar of all of SEAL Team Sixteen... I loved Eve & Ralph's story and also the information about Dunkirk. Until you'd put out your request for some Dunkirk books a while back, I'd been unaware of the whole incident...and that's a crime, that's a part of history that should be kept fresh. Just do me a favor with the next one...don't try to rip my heart out, I can't take it again! ;o)"

"I LOVED IT!"

"Setting: Washington, D.C., and the Florida Everglades

"Last year, I was raving about how wonderful Suzanne Brockmann's UNSUNG HERO was. Now I'm raving even more so for the second big book about the U.S. Navy SEALs that's filled with sizzling romance, suspenseful dangerous missions filled with non-stop actions that is sure to thrill you right to the end.

"THE DEFIANT HERO features John "Nils" Nilsson who like the Energizer Bunny just keeps on going and going. He doesn't know the meaning of the word quit.  In no-win situations he thinks there has got to be a way to beat the system and he usually does. He's about to meet the ultimate challenge when a terrorist is held hostage in the Kazbekistanian Embassy in Washington, D.C. John is called on by his best friend, Meg Moore, to help her save her 10-year old daughter and grandmother, who have been captured by terrorists. Meg is between a rock and a hard place as she has to abduct and kill a rival terrorist or her daughter and grandmother will be killed. Meg knows John is the only person who can help her.

"Get ready for breath-taking excitement as some of the U.S. Navy SEALs Team Sixteen's Troubleshooters headed by Tom Paoletti whom you met in THE UNSUNG HERO are back with WildCard, Jazz, Sam Starrett and buddies to help out. And gorgeous sharpshooter, Alyssa Locke, is back and making Sam sweat bullets as she pulls the rug out from under him. Oh baby; wait until you read this part. And Nils and Meg are discovering just how hot a friendship can get now that Nils finds out Meg is no longer married.

"Grandmother Eve has her own kettle of fish to deal with, as her hands are full trying to keep herself and granddaughter Amy alive. To pass the time she tells Amy and their guard, a man named Bear, the story of the love of her life. She is just like Shahrazad, out of the Arabian Nights, telling a story a day to keep alive. This is just one of the fascinating stories Ms. Brockmann presents us with and it is just as compelling as the others that drives the story along as each segment is revealed. I found myself unable to put the book down as there are quite a few exciting storylines going here that literally dare you to stop reading. The result makes this a knockout of a novel. Ms. Brockmann is a phenomenal talent; she is getting better with every book.  -- Suzanne "Hanging Out for a Hero. I'm Having Trouble Choosing Between John, Ralph, and Sam, and I Bet You Will Too!" Coleburn

"Suzanne Brockmann is an automatic buy! Her heroes are spectacular, her heroines the empowerment of women, and the rest of her characters are in-depth and dynamic, in stories that are keepers to be read and re-read over and over again." -- Suzanne Coleburn, The Belles and Beaux of Romance

"Finally, the strength of character exhibited by Eve during the ordeal of her captivity with Amy is phenomenal. The story she tells of growing up, caring for her brother and her experiences with first love and the devastation of WWII was incredibly moving. In this portion of the story, Brockmann far outdoes herself with her gift of storytelling. I hung on every word.

"The shifts of focus are well timed and kept me interested and reading well into the night. Together, the different threads and the strong characterizations work together to make this a fabulous read and great addition to my Keeper Shelf. I'm really looking forward to Brockmann's next work, due out later this year, which will feature Alyssa and Sam as the lead characters. If their story in The Defiant Hero is any indication, that story may set flame to the bookshelf!" -- Jeri Cerutti, The Romance Journal.  (Read the entire review at:  http://www.romancejournal.com/reviews/brockmann_tdh.htm

"Continuing her novels of romantic suspense that feature Navy SEAL heroes (The Unsung Hero), Brockmann brings together a heroine whose daughter and grandmother have been kidnapped by religious terrorists and a SEAL hero who was in love with the heroine years earlier and is now charged with negotiating the situation.  She then spins an unforgettable, riveting adventure that is fast-paced and a bit chilling." -- The Library Journal

Note From Suz:  Hey, recognize the gorgeous guy on THE DEFIANT HERO's stepback?  Yes, you're right!  That's none other than cover model John DeSalvo.  I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Romantic Times Conference in Houston this past November (2000).  I'll be posting pictures as soon as I get 'em developed.  (Click here to see the picture of John and me!)
